As you may have noticed, I've been working hard to catch up on my reviews this week, from before R.I.P. as well as some of the spooky books I've read since the start of September. I've almost caught up now - my thoughts on Coraline will go up while I'm away, and I'll write my review for The Stepford Wives when I get back - but one book has been tormenting me. That book is We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver, a novel so complex and thought-provoking and utterly brilliant that it is proving UTTERLY impossible to talk about in anything less than a full-blown book-club-style discussion (which my poor mother was subjected to the entire week I was reading it, for most of our twenty-minutes-each-way journeys to and from work). I can rant at length about amazing characterisation, the culture of school shootings, bad parenting, psychologically damaged young people... but I just CANNOT WRITE ABOUT IT.
So I'm not even going to try - at least, not yet. If I suddenly get inspired sometime in the future, I'll give it a go, but for now I'm giving it up as an Unreviewable Book and moving on! I'll just say that it is without doubt the best book I've read this year so far (and likely to make the top 5 even if the last three months of 2013 are spectacular!), that the characters and their journeys felt utterly real and deeply compelling, that I wrote about ten pages of furiously scribbled notes as I was reading, that the writing is beautiful, that I loved the way Shriver allows her readers to form their own theories and sympathies, and that Lynne Ramsey's movie (starring Ezra Miller and Tilda Swinton) is cinematically gorgeous and superbly acted. So... get reading. And watching. Seriously.
Aaaaand so, to our holiday! We're going away tomorrow - the taxi's coming at stupid o'clock to whisk us off for a 7:30am flight - so I'll be out of blogging action for a little over a week. Happily, we're once again heading off to a quiet scenic corner of Fuerteventura (my mum, sister and I) for seven days of lounging by a pool, snoozing in the sunshine, eating delicious food, sipping cocktails, playing cards by candlelight with posh coffee and live music, staring at the ocean... and reading like crazy. Last year I posted some photos from the week, and also a run-down of what we all read. I barely read at all, to my horror - mostly because I started with a duff book, I think - but this time I seem to be on a reading roll and I have some great books lined up to take with me... I'll see you all when I get back, hopefully with some excellent reading recommendations. :)
