THE STICKY NOTE OF NEWS

I've got a new About Me page! No particular reason, I just thought it was a fun replacement for the now-defunct Review Policy page I had before. Plus I can chop and change it on a regular basis, which will give me something else to play with when I'm bored at the shop. :)

Top Ten Books On My Spring TBR List

I've not participated for a few weeks, but I'm a sucker for a book list so this week's prompt was just too good to resist!  Of course, I will inevitably end up veering OFF the list within a week, but half the fun's in the planning, right?  As usual, TTT is hosted by the lovely ladies over at The Broke and the Bookish.

So, these are the top ten books I've got ready and waiting for me this spring!  They're in no particular order, because I'm not that organised.  :)

Cream Teas, Traffic Jams and Sunburn: The Great British Holiday
by Brian Viner
Probably the one I'm most looking forward to from my current stash of library books.  I love travel writing that gently pokes fun at our quirkily unique British holiday traditions, so I'm hoping this one will be funny, nostalgic, familiar and an all-round delight!

We Need to Talk About Kevin
by Lionel Shriver
It sounds a bit wrong to say that I can't wait to read this - but it's true!  I'm genuinely excited to finally find out what all the fuss is about, PLUS I'll be able to watch the movie at last.  It may not be the most pleasant of subject matters, but I'm all geared up for a cracking read that I can't put down...

Player One
by Douglas Coupland
I'd never heard of this book until I saw Sanne's video review on her YouTube channel, Books and Quills (highly addictive, if you haven't already discovered it).  It sounds very interesting - about a bunch of people stuck in an airport lounge while the world goes to hell around them - so I was delighted when the lovely Hanna bought it me for Christmas!

It's Not Me, It's You!
by Jon Richardson
I actually read some of this on my ill-fated Kindle - this was the 'half' in the 'one and a half books' I ever read on the horrible thing.  Happily I found a paperback copy in The Works last year, and I've been looking forward to going back and reading it properly, right through to the end this time.  It's about the way in which perfectionism and obsessive tendencies make relationships with other people difficult - I'm anticipating doing a lot of sympathetic nodding as I read... :)

The Winter of our Disconnect
by Susan Maushart
I've had this book for ages and keep meaning to read it while the winter months are still upon us - so now seems as good a time as any...  There's snow on the ground AND I'm in the middle of a drive to step away from my laptop more often and do constructive things like Reading A Book or Clearing Out Some Crap during my free hours, so I'm hoping to be inspired by the Mausharts' experience!

Carrie
by Stephen King
I haven't read any Stephen King since I nervously read Pet Sematary about two and a half years ago (and loved it, by the way), yet I have a whole pile of his books, and this one in particular has been on my shelves for YEARS.  With the new film adaptation hitting cinemas this autumn, I'd really like to read the book and maybe see the iconic Sissy Spacek movie before 2013 is over.

Books, Baguettes and Bedbugs: The Left Bank World of Shakespeare and Company
by Jeremy Mercer
Most of my regular readers will know that this is one of my favourite books of all time, and also one of my inspirations when Mum and I started talking about running our own bookshop.  I haven't reread it since before we opened, probably about four and a half years ago now, so I'm getting a hankering to settle in for another dose of life amongst the books in Shakespeare and Co!

Arcadia
by Lauren Groff
The story of a hippie commune in the 1970s, its rise and fall, its ideals and its secrets, as seen through the life of Bit, a child born soon after it was founded.  I've been looking forward to this one for months, so I was well chuffed to find it at the library, putting an end to the seemingly eternal wait for the paperback to come out!

Agorafabulous: Dispatches From My Bedroom
by Sara Benincasa
No prizes for guessing why this book made it onto my shelves within a couple of days of its release!  I may not have been so restricted by my illness that I couldn't even go to the bathroom, but I WAS unable to leave the house for more than five minutes at a time, for well over a year.  I'm hoping for great - and funny - things from this one...

Ready Player One
by Ernest Cline
I don't think I've read a negative review of this novel yet!  Everyone seems to have showered it with praise - amusing, full of brilliant 80s references, offbeat, a pleasure to read, addictive - and I can't wait to finally find out what all the fuss has been about!  Also, the blurb on the front cover says "Willy Wonka meets The Matrix"... and who could resist that?

Which books are you dying to get stuck into this Spring?  Is there anything you're particularly looking forward to as the weather gets warmer?  If you're a fellow TTT-er, feel free to leave me a link to your post!

  1. There is a book called Player One, AS WELL as Ready Player One?! Well, that's confusing. I am so clapping in my head at a lot of these books! I ultimately decided that I didn't really like We Need To Talk About Kevin, BUT I also definitely couldn't put it down. And Stephen King, do iiiiiiiit!! (Although I did NOT like the movie. Just, out of respect for the book, really.)

    1. Oh Laura, you have to read it so bad it's not even funny. I'll be reviewing that one properly, mostly because I already wrote a review before I started the blog so... no work. Haha, that's dedication. :)

There is indeed a Player One, and reading them both in the same few months WILL be confusing, but I'm sure all will be well. I mostly want to read WNtTAK as a conduit to the movie, I must admit, because Ezra Miller is so frickin' magnificent in EVERY SINGLE FILM he's ever made that I've been curious about Kevin for far too long. Oh, and I knew you'd like the King appearance. I JUST KNEW. :D

  2. I read the synopsis of Ready Player One for the first time today and it looks amazing. Really love the whole concept and I will definitely be picking it up soon! Great list, I hope you get round to reading some of these this spring :)

  3. I hope you get to all of these his spring, and enjoy them all. I want to re-read Carrie too, then watch the older movie, and the newer one coming out this year.

  4. Ooh, Stephen King! Can't go wrong with him. I've been wanting to get to Arcadia for a while now -- really loved the author's previous novel. Great list!

  5. I watched the film of Kevin a few months ago not really realising what it was about. It was quite harrowing (although left me with no desire to read the book). The film is very good though, whether or not you enjoy the book.

  6. I've only heard good things about "Ready Player One" and so need to add it to my list. I think my near future will be involving rereads of "A Tale of Two Cities" and "Neverwhere" - two of my favourites. I have new books to read, but they don't seem to be happening at the moment, and I know very well that one listen to the radio adaptation of Neverwhere will make me desperate for a reread. It's been 14 months since the last reread, and therefore long overdue!

  8. Mmmm, I love this topic! I could happily spend all day whizzing around everybody's Spring TBR posts. The only problem is it makes me want to read everybody else's books as well as my own... It's a hard life.

The Agorafabulous book looks amazing, but you've been talking about it for ages. Get it read, woman! I'm sure I saw it on here more than an hour ago!

However, I AM really tired and I skim-read it as 'Dispatches from my Bottom...'

I've picked up We Need To Talk About Kevin a good few times in charity shops, but I think I've ultimately decided it's not My Thing. I can't even remember what it's about, but I do remember crossing it off the mental list once and for all.

Whilst not technically incorrect, that should of course say 'more than a year ago.'

  12. Ready Player One + Agorafabulous. They are both amazing. Like, "I'm so very very glad I read these" amazing.
