On wizard duelling, stupid Hufflepuffs, and a customer with the book bug

Today's books

My day

11:00am
Another portion-of-a-chapter of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets read over coffee and a choc chip muffin this morning, bringing me nicely to one of my favourite moments - the duelling 'tutorial' with Professors Lockhart and Snape.  The difference between the two teachers is so stark, and Lockhart is so ridiculous, I love it!  And this -
"Snape's upper lip was curling.  Harry wondered why Lockhart was still smiling; if Snape had been looking at him like that he'd have been running as fast as he could in the opposite direction."
- nearly made me spray my coffee everywhere...  This really is the scene that just keeps on giving!  The moment when Snape blasts Lockhart right off the stage is probably the only moment in the entire series when I'm mentally cheering right along with the Slytherins, and shamelessly delighting in a teacher being knocked on his ass.

Of course, this is also the Parseltongue scene, which is brilliant - especially because in the book, it's much more natural.  In the film Harry almost seems to go into a trance as he speaks, whereas in the book it's just normal speech that happens to come out in another language.  You get the feeling this is what also happened in the zoo in Book the First; the link is much stronger.  And THEN, just when you think this chapter couldn't get any more awesome, there's this line from Lockhart:
"Whoops - my wand is a little over-excited."
I can just imagine JKR sniggering into her tea as she wrote THAT one.

12:45pm
This morning I met a book-loving girl who has just moved here after uni and is In Search Of Her People.  She buys too many books, can't stay out of bookshops even when she has no money, keeps a reading journal and arranges her books in alphabetical order on her bookshelves at home.  She said whenever she talks to new people who maybe like to read, she is always waiting for them to look at her sideways and say, "Er, I don't like reading that much..."  Sound familiar?!

Let's just say she was surprised and very happy when instead of bemused-laughing and raising an eyebrow, I happy-laughed and said "Me too!"  Next step - introducing her to the magical world that is the book blogosphere.  ;)

9:30pm
More Pottery reading over sandwiches and coffee.  I tell ya, I am on a total 'reading over sandwiches and coffee' kick this week - I think it's the finger food effect - and today I've done it TWICE with different sandwiches.  *pauses*  Yes, I have just realised how tragic it is that my sandwich consumption constitutes interesting news in my world.  But hey!  Everyone likes sandwiches, right?  Go with it.

So, Potter.  Okay, so, what I'm wondering is, HOW did I not realise that Ginny had something to do with the monstery attacks at Hogwarts the first time I read it?  I mean, in Book the First, there is not an INKLING that Quirrell is The Bad Guy because he's a part of the story anyway and all the suspicion is diverted cleverly away via Snape.  Draco just doesn't cut it as a red herring in this book, and Ginny - who is barely MENTIONED otherwise - keeps popping up being distraught every time someone gets Petrified.

What else?  Oh yeah, Hufflepuffs are stupid.  I felt so gutted for Harry, hearing Ernie 'Daily Mail' Macmillan gossiping about him - like a great Dark Wizard would just wander up to his next victim and go "OH HAI, I know we're being watched with great interest by the entire school and two teachers including one who hates me, but I'm just gonna stand over here and make this snake bite you a bit, k?"  And just one more tiny thing - I am VERY disappointed that Christmas dinner in Year Two is not described with great deliciousness like it was in Year 1.  Third helpings of Christmas pudding does not a Hogwarts Christmas make...

Okay, well, I'm at work again in the morning, so I'll sign off there and go make more tea or something.  Maybe just go to bed, even?  *yawns extravagantly and wanders off looking dazed*

I bought a book!

I posted the trailer for this movie on Wednesday after my sister pointed it out and said it reminded her of my review of Dearly, DepartedIt looks fantastic, and we want to go and see it at the cinema... and then I noticed that it's based on a book.  So I have totally broken my buying ban and acquired a copy.

The bad news?  Laura and Bex now have a totally legitimate reason to kill me for being the first to crack like a dragon egg in a gamekeeper's fireplace (see what I did there?).  Also, I have only actually FINISHED one book this year, and that ain't goin' nowhere, so the ratio of books in/out is still THE WRONG WAY even though it's only one book.

The good news?  Well, it IS only one book, and we all know that I would probably have acquired way more than that already had the book ban not been in place.  It's also only 256 pages long, or something tiny like that, and I'm going to have to read it sharpish if I want to see it on the big screen, so it'll not have time to join Mount TBR as yet another long-unread title on my shelves.  *sighs deeply*  Yes, I'm very ashamed of myself.  But at least it was a considered title and not a random buy that I'm never going to read, right?  RIGHT?  *looks very guilty and slopes off to the naughty corner until further notice*

  1. Yay for buying a book! I am looking forward to watching that movie. It just looks so fun! :) Also, reading HP in the morning sounds like a great morning to me.

    1. It does make for a nice start to the day! I try to make sure I have at least half an hour or so free, and I sit on my bedroom floor in front of the radiator with my book and my breakfast, relaxing before it's time to get ready. Definitely one of the high points of my day! :)

  2. ELLIE YOU ARE SO NAUGHTY I AM GOING TO HAVE TO SMACK YOUR BOTTOM!
(You did a whole month though and that was very good. Now NO MORE)

Who is this girl of which you speak, and is she now your best friend? I hope so! She definitely needs a blog. Yes.

    1. PROMISES, PROMISES. Haha, it's so nice to know that even though we've been married for practically a fortnight, the spice is still there. ;)

I won't buy any more, I swears. This one caught me off-guard! And as for the girl - well, fifteen minutes doth not make a best friend, but she is clearly a Kindred Spirit, so I'm sure I'll see her again sometime soon. She has no job yet and likes books, where else is she gonna go? ;)

    1. I'm sure I'll recognise her next time she comes in - she had long mad dyed crimson hair, for a start - so I'll get chatting again and point her in the right direction. Book blogging certainly worked for ME when I was drifting a bit and wanted to bond with some bookish people... I think she was just happy to meet someone as book-crazy as she is! ;)

  4. I LOVE Warm Bodies. I'm really not convinced about the film...maybe I should watch the trailer but the tie-in cover makes me cringe. Looks like Halloween make-up. Plus it sounds liek they've tried to make it YA romancey for the Twilight crowd. I may be wrong but I'M SCARED TO LOOK. The book is so brilliantly subtle and all the things I love just won't translate into film, like the bits with punctuation.

    1. I'd never heard of it before, but I love the trailer - maybe I'll love the book even more! It's great when that happens, when a movie turns me on to a book I wouldn't have known about otherwise. The trailer looks kinda quirky and funny, not all Twilight-angsty or anything, so I'm looking forward to going to see it. Now I just need to finish HP2 so I can start reading!

    2. I gave in and watched the trailer. Yes it is looking more like a comedy...but still not the same tone as the book. I'm not sure I want to laugh at their story, I usually don't mind departures from the book but I seem to be against this one! I'm sure lots of people will love it though.

    3. Hmmm. I guess I'll have to wait and see how I feel about it once I've read the book! Maybe the trailer was just playing for laughs? I mean, the story behind that looks quite sweet and sensitively done. NOW I AM ALL CONFLICTED! And I haven't even read it yet! Aaaargh! :)

  5. Oh my, I'm obsessed with this book blog! Every time I visit, you have posted awesomeness! Here's my awesomeness: I'm doing a Valentine's giveaway on my blog! Enter here: http://theartofbeingbald.blogspot.com/2013/02/announcing-valentines-giveaway.html

    1. Also, got the "er...I don't read that much..." look from my roommates at dinner two nights ago. It was followed by awkward silence. Ha ha ftl!

    2. You really do love Valentine's Day! I like the idea of celebrating being single instead, but I tend to just skip over it these days... :(

I adore it when someone comes into the shop, and we sort of tentatively start talking, and find some kind of super-bookish common ground that we don't normally get to talk about because other people don't get it. It makes my day!

  6. I love your bookshop friend already. You must introduce her to book blogging and then we can all adopt her. The more bookish people the better, I think!

I was shocked when, the first time I read the Harry Potter books, I found myself cheering Snape on in the dual. Lockhart is just that irritating (him and his wand *childish snort*)

I was rescued at the last minute from buying a copy of Warm Bodies by my friend, whose mum owned a copy she could lend me. Looking forward to reading that... eventually. Still plodding through Les Miserables, though.

    1. Awww, we could have an adopt a book blogger event and all drop by to say hello! This is totally happening next time she comes in...

Lockhart really IS that irritating. And it all helps boost the Snape-love, I reckon. Even without the benefit of hindsight, you can't hate him when he's taking a blithering idiot down a few pegs!

I'm still plodding through Jane Eyre, but I reckon once I've finished HP2 in the next day or two, I'll maybe take a stop-gap and spend one of my days off reading Warm Bodies. We can't do much on Wednesday anyway because we have a viewing in the morning, so it'll be a good time to get stuck into a book!

  7. I am so glad your new friend has you to help introduce her to the book blogging world- she needs to know she's not alone!!

I want to read Warm Bodies too! But I just don't know how to make it happen, I'm already reading so much and I'm already behind in review writing! It's terrible.

And now I want to go to the Book Depository and order all the Harry Potter Great Britain edition books, because, dammit, I might be an American, but I can handle sweaters being called jumpers. That is all. ;)

    1. Haha, I'm sure I'm going to get all over-enthusiastic and pounce on her next time she comes in - I'll probably scare her to death! If you're a book person, it doesn't take much reading of other people's blogs before you're tempted to start your own, I reckon.

I think, given the rather time-sensitive nature of reading Warm Bodies so I can go see the film, I'm just going to drop everything on my days off this week and read it then. Jane Eyre can wait - and it's such a short book, it's entirely doable...

YES to jumpers and British editions. One of the HP readalong posts had a discussion in the comments involving Lucius Malfoy, dollar bills and quarters, and I was like NOOOO! Magical money aside, Lucius is British aristocracy! THERE WILL BE NO DOLLARS! We'll have you taking tea and cucumber sandwiches of an afternoon yet... ;)

    2. Lol ok I didn't know I had mad dyed crimson hair! :P tho I am totally loving the Fame in your book blog! And will now start my own having seen how cool all the people here are.

Am enjoying the induction into blog world, and as for scared to death, NEVER! (Hope have not scared you either with my "ahh there someone like me here and get to talk books!")

Plus your fault I found this since you said you and funny customer stories just didnt expect I would be one :)

    3. I think I may have misremembered slightly actually - I'd only met you once, after all... But I DID recognise you when you came back, which is quite unusual when I've only met someone once! :D

I did love the way half the comments on this post were fixated on meeting another book lover - like, the overwhelming reaction was "WHO IS THIS PERSON? WHEN CAN WE MEET HER? SHALL WE THROW HER A PARTY?!" That's what I love about book blogging, it's a very inclusive and everyone always likes meeting another book fiend!

Haha, you just wait. This was a NICE customer story. You'll know the bad, mad 'n' funny ones when you come to them... ;)
