Today #insixwords: Slow, steady and LOVING my book! :)
~ Reading Notes ~
9:30am
Okay, time to get going. I want today to be a really good reading day! I've had breakfast, I've caught up on the beginning of the Twitter chat from last night (plenty still to read later!) and visited a couple more blogs to say HELLO AND HAPPY READING, so now I reckon it's time to sit down and get back into Jane's story... In the meantime, here's your mug 'n' muffin porn for today!
1:45pm
Aaaaalrighty. I'm showered, lunched, and back to my book. I've spent lunchtime getting caught right up on last night's fabulous Twitter chat (which I tell ya, takes longer than the hour it was originally crammed into!), and before that I read a chunk of Jane Eyre to contribute to today's page count. Time has skipped forward and as of RIGHT NOW Jane is just getting settled at Thornfield and making the acquaintance of Mrs Fairfax and flightly little Adele (who I always found annoying rather than cheering - we'll see how I feel about THAT a few years on!). I did very much like this passage, about the young Jane setting out in the world by herself:
"It is a very strange sensation to inexperienced youth to feel itself quite alone in the world, cut adrift from every connection, uncertain whether the port to which it is bound can be reached, and prevented by many impediments from returning to that it has quitted. The charm of adventure sweetens that sensation, the glow of pride warms it: but then the throb of fear disturbs it: and fear with me became predominant, when half an hour lapsed and still I was alone."
Haven't we all felt like that at one time or another when we've ventured into the unknown, going somewhere we've never been before, or perhaps stranded somewhere and beginning to feel more frightened than adventurous? Beautiful writing... Now, I'm off to start thinking about my answers for the Vampires in Popular Fiction challenge, then it's back to my book!
5:20pm
Oh internets, pleeaaaaaase stop distracting me from my bookish reverie! If it's not Twitter it's blog hopping, if it's not blog hopping it's back to Twitter again, and if it is NEITHER OF THESE THINGS then it's YouTube, because I suddenly got an urge to go Google Jane Eyre trailers. Then I had to spend a good 15 minutes inwardly debating which Jane Eyre I like best. I mean, the Zeffirelli version was my first love, and Charlotte Gainsbourg is awesome, but it feels quite dated and... William Hurt has since been royally surpassed in the Hot Rochester stakes, y'know?
The BBC version is lively and flirty and youthful, but even though I OF COURSE swooned over Toby Stephens I'm not sure his Rochester was QUITE what I had in mind. Also, he sometimes reminds me a bit of Hugh Grant, which is definitely not brooding enough for me!
Perhaps the newest version - as yet unwatched - will turn out to be my favourite. So far so promising... Michael Fassbender certainly LOOKS like the Rochester I've been waiting for since I fell in love with the book nineteen years ago, so it just remains to be seen whether the rest lives up to expectations! No pressure there or anything...

Okay, I think I'll spend a few minutes doing today's vampire challenge, and then it's time for the rest of those Indian snack bites, something coffee-related, and more of my book before I start pondering a DVD for the evening!
9:25pm
End of chapter, end of day for me I reckon... I've left Mr Rochester sprawled on the couch in front of the fire, Jane sitting in the parlour trying to work him out, and Mrs Fairfax concealing secrets about his past. This is why I'm more of a Brontë girl, y'know - there's proper chemistry and teasing and drawing out of life experience between Jane and Edward in a way that just wouldn't happen with Austen's couples. In Austen's world they'd just go off and talk about each other to their friends and siblings, then maybe smile and dance a bit. Everybody hears everything from the neighbours, not from the source, and nobody seems to know each other that well (admittedly, Rochester's secret mad wife thing was a fairly big oversight, but... shut up). Yeah, Brontës forever, y'all! Of course, I'm planning to reread Pride and Prejudice in the very near future for the Big Anniversary, so I maybe I'll be won round yet? :)
Right, time to go in search of tea and cake, and find something non-film-length to YET AGAIN watch too late. What can I say, I know I wanted to stop at 8pm each night, but then it rolls around so quickly and I just keep reading! *sighs deeply* Maybe tomorrow? Maybe tomorrow...
~ Vampires in Popular Fiction Challenge ~
Hosted by The One With Rachel's Book
WHO are your favourite vampires? And WHY?I want everyone to name one guy vamp and
one lady vamp (and the books/series they are from, just so everyone
knows), and explain why they have a place in your heart as your super most
favourite vampires ever!
Favourite guy vamp should be easiest, so I'll start there. Ummmm... *ponders*... *regrets hasty words*... Right, I'm going to have to go for a tie here, because I can't choose. Clearly, I am not so shallow as to choose my vampires purely for sex appeal but... well, it doesn't hurt, y'know what I'm saying? So vamp numero uno has to be Eric Northman (from Charlaine Harris's books and the True Blood series, in case you've been living under a rock). He's got serious gravitas as Sheriff of Area 5 and Lord of Fangtasia - even if that DOES make him sound a bit Disney Prince. Overlord, perhaps? Anyway, he's got the awe factor, and the hotness, and the casual disregard for pretty much everybody else that manages to be strangely sexy. BUT he also has the 'awwww' factor (different thing) in Dead to the World/Season 4 If I thought Eric was hot and dangerous before, I liked him even BETTER when he was hot and dangerous AND quite nice.
Choice numero dos skips completely into the TV world and OH NOES I just thought of a third one. Ohhhh, Henry from Blood Ties. Oh, now I've done it. Can I have three? Or is that greedy? OH NO FOUR! How could I have forgotten the many incarnations of Dracula? Nope, I'll stick with my original second, but I'll cheat by linking to this post about Blood Ties, as well as this Top Ten Tuesday Weird Crushes post, so you can still read about my strange infatuation with Young Dracula's honey-tongued Count, should you choose to do so.
RIGHT, so numero dos is Mick St. John from Moonlight. Yes, he occasionally talks like something out of a gangster movie (it's the accent), but he is SMOKIN' hot. He reminds me a lot of Josh Lucas when he smiles (hellooooo sailor), he's devoted to pretty news reporter Beth, he kicks ass against bad guys, be they human or not-so-human, AND he looks really good in those hot fitted sweater top thingies. Excuse me for just asex SEC... *fans self frantically*

Aaaand so to the lady-vamp contingent. I realised (belatedly) that I had overlooked leather-clad minx Selene (of Underworld fame), exotic Queen of the Damned Akasha and diminutive shopaholic Alice Cullen - but I reckon my choice still stands. I went for another True Blood/Southern Vampire Mysteries character, feisty lady-lovin' Pam. Seriously sarcastic, compulsively lustful, impeccably dressed and fiercely loyal, Pam frickin' rocks. She just does. Also, in this picture she KIND of looks like Angelina Jolie which, y'know, is never a bad thing...

Soooo, who'd make it onto the top of YOUR vampire hotlist? Male or female, bookish or screen-based, tell me in the comments! Or, if you're a fellow BoB-er, feel free to leave me a link so I can come check out your answers that way... :)

That's a great quote and yes comments do make the world a shinier place:)
ReplyDeleteDon't they just? I think I've done more commenting than reading this week - just doin' my bit to make the blogosphere a little brighter! ;)
DeleteCame to check your vampire choices and am faced with a Jane Eyre post?! Became an immediate follower - Jane Eyre is my favourite book :)
ReplyDeleteOh, the movie-adaptation with William Hurt was what introduced me to Jane Eyre and I loved the story straight away. As for the BBC series, I have mixed feelings about it: I didn't liked it but at the same time couldn't stop watching the series.
Now, the new adaptation with Michael "My Cinema Crush" Fassbender was a bit of a let down - sorry to spoil things for you. I had high expectations about it and when I finally saw the movie, I came tumbling down. The best thing about the whole movie was Fassy as Mr. Rochester - he is indeed, the best Mr. Rochester but I guess having a crush on him is to blame ;-)
Dracula (Gary Oldman... always Gary Oldman :D)?! Henry?! So many vampires to choose... how can we do it?! And Mick St.John?! How on earth did I forgot about you?!
I loved Moonlight and was upset when they cancelled the show - not fair... not fair... :(
And, despite not being a True Blood watcher, I have to admit Eric is a good choice ;-)
And from the few episodes I saw, Pam definitely seems like a cool lady vamp and she does looks a bit like Angelina Jolie and yes, that's never a bad thing ^_^
Oh, sorry the long comment *blushes*
XX Ner
Wow - usually it's me leaving the epic comments on OTHER people's blogs, hehe!
DeleteI read Jane Eyre as a little girl, but the Zeffirelli adaptation was the first screen version I saw. I did like the BBC adaptation, but Mr Rochester was perhaps a little too informal and cheery for me. It was nice to see more of Jane's boldness shining through though! I'm a Fassbender girl too so I'm sure I'll love the new film - I'm not a purist and usually pretty good at judging a screen version on its own merits. I'll report back... :)
I only discovered Blood Ties and Moonlight AFTER they'd been cancelled and were out on cheap DVD, so I'm sad there was no more to enjoy. I'm always a Dracula fan, but yes, Gary Oldman was once again my first and therefore has a special little place in my... ummm, neck... reserved for him!
The newest Jane Eyre with Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska is SO GOOD. LEARN IT LOVE IT LIVE IT.
ReplyDeleteI have high hopes! I may love the book, but I'm not a purist when it comes to movie adaptations so I'm fairly sure I'll be well pleased! :)
DeleteOh, I hear you on internet and especially Twitter as being the big distractions! It was the same for me today *sigh* I didn't get much reading done today either and it didn't help that I had to stand on the subway on my way home. (Also, the book was not the right one, I guess.)
ReplyDeleteI hope you can get some more reading done tomorrow! Especially since it's Jane Eyre ;)
Btw, I totally agree on Mick St. John. I love his attitude, and then there are his looks *swoon*
Getting the wrong book for the day definitely doesn't help. I did that on holiday and wasted, like, two days on a book that just wasn't made for holidays. KICKING myself later.
DeleteHooray for another Mick St. John fan! ;)
Oh I totally forgot about Pam, I did remember Eric and then totally went on a tangent and decided to stick with Kanin and Allie from The Immortal Rules! But I love you picks so much better! And I get distracted by the internet all the time! Especially twitter as I have it on my phone! Glad to see you'e still enjoying Jane Eyre! :)
ReplyDeleteAhh yes, going off on a tangent... I'm very familiar with that phenomenon! ;)
DeleteFortunately I don't have Twitter on my phone - or anything else in fact, it's a relic and I pretty much just use it as an alarm clock - or I'd probably have gone mad by now!
Pesky Twitter and it's distracting ways! I feel ya sister. I should probably be reading right now too but I wanted to leave some comment love first!
ReplyDeleteGreat fangy choices :) Eric Northman is second to my numero uno Bones...for all the reasons you stated! I will never forget book 4 *le sigh*
Pam was also a good choice! She's probably the most ruthless of the female vamps.
Oh look, Twitter! *scurries off*
♥Isalys / Book Soulmates
PS: Your ducky mug is cute!
That's the thing - once I get started on the comment love, an hour can disappear so quickly! By the time that's done there's more to read on Twitter... and so it goes. :)
DeleteOhhh, book 4. I fully intend to reread the first bunch this year before I READ ON with the series, and I'm very much looking forward to reliving that one. Eric's gracious plenty. Oh yes. *sighs happily*
Jane Eyre is one of my absolute favorites! I also LOVE your duck mug!!! Do you know where I can order one? I am one of those "love fun mugs" people.
ReplyDeleteBeth :-)
I have no idea, I'm afraid - it's my sister's, I just nick it sometimes because it's the biggest one in the house. More coffee for meeeee! I had a scout online but the closest one I could find was long-term unavailable anyway. Keep lookin'! :)
DeleteYou poor thing, the internet is SOOO distracting! But maybe it's because I'm an anti-social grump, or because I'm a lazy bum, but I have to force myself to get online and comment on stuff and Tweet to people, cause I'd rather just lay around and read and maybe take a nap. OR go on Pinterest... which has no relation to BoB, so that's a time-waster too.
ReplyDeleteOh and YAY Eric Northman :-D
I think it's a 'living with the family' thing for me. When I was next door in the flat I'd probably have spent a helluva lot more time reading and napping, but in the MAIN HOUSE there are people around all the time. If I was found napping I'd be woken unceremoniously by an irate mother, and sometimes when I'm trying to read and there's noisy stuff happening I think "sod it, might as well pop online until it quietens down again..." THREE HOURS LATER... ;)
DeleteI totally agree with everything you've said, from Jane to Eric and Pam, which makes me even more sure why I follow your blog, the ONLY tiny difference I'd like to point is that the Eric Pam duo from the southern vampire misteries is far more appealing than the one from True Blood... but that would be all!!!
ReplyDeleteI'll need to reread the first few books before I move on, I think. I've only read 1-4 and then I faltered for some reason, and since then the TV series has kind of eclipsed it in my memory. 2013 is definitely the year for a refresher course and finishing to the end!
DeleteFavorites: Spike, Henry, Bones (Night huntress) Eric, and Damon ...kinda sorta in that order.
ReplyDeleteNON Favorites: Angel, Angel, Angel, and Louis (from Interview)
I do not like my vampire men wussy. I do not.
When I first saw Buffy (probably too young, but whatevs) I totally had a thing for Angel - but since then I've been all like "Whaaaaat was I thinking?!" My sister got the complete box set for Christmas so I reckon this time around I'm going to be ALL ABOUT SPIKE. Ditto Louis - the first few times I saw it I like him way better; the most recent time, not so much. FOR GOD'S SAKE MAN BITE SOMETHING ALREADY! ;)
DeleteOh yes first time round it was Angel and now it's all about Spike. Although it's been a while, I fancy a bit of a marathon (once I'm done with Big Bang Theory).
DeleteI think you're have a cake-and-muffin-a-thon.
I'm going to have a Buffy marathon once Hannah's done with her viewing I think. I'm looking forward to it - except for the ventriloquist dummy episode which scarred me for life as a kid. I can't even look at 'em now, euuurgh.
DeleteAnd YES! No day in my life would be complete without muffinage. In fact, one of the cards from my sister's amazing Christmas box was a picture of a kind of bouquet of muffins, and underneath she'd written "Do you know... the muffin man? I think he may be your dream man!" :P
Thanks for participating!! It's taken so long for me to get around to replying to these fantastic suggestions! I loved Blood ties, but by the time it came out in the UK, it had already been cancelled in Canada and I was totally gutted. Eric and Pam seem to be top choices all-round, and I have to admit that my laptop background is currently a rather tasty picture of Eric :)
ReplyDeleteI know, I discovered Blood Ties waaaaay after it got cancelled I think, when it was selling cheap somewhere, and I was really disappointed when I found out there was no more to look forward to! I've got a rotating slideshow as my desktop, and yes, Eric is one of the pictures! :P
