Yup, this week marked the second visit of a certain shoe-loving miss to our little tourist haven! And this time, we went shopping TOGETHER. (*watches with interest as local booksellers and charity shop managers faint at the mere memory*) It was like typing 'Google' into Google - the world held its breath, universes collided... okay, I might be exaggerating, but it was COOL.
Once Hanna had finished scouring our shop shelves (you should always warm up properly before exercising, kiddies), we headed out into town. Our first stop was the fantastic new(ish) Derbyshire Air Ambulance shop, which has a wall of books and has never let me down, not once, ever. Hanna helpfully spotted a copy of Rules of Civility by Amor Towles, which is AWESOME because it's so new and shiny and looked like it had never been read and was ONLY 95 PENCE. Oh yes. They've had a trade paperback copy of Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann for ages, and I've almost succumbed a couple of times, but I REALLY don't like trade paperbacks. Happily, this time they also had a regular paperback edition for another bargainous 95p, so I snapped that up too. So far so good!

At the last minute I spotted another shelf with a few more recent books. I resisted a couple of them (*pats self on back*) and ummed and aahed over Mrs Robinson's Disgrace by Kate Summerscale for a few minutes. Reluctantly putting it back on the shelf and moving onto the DVDs, I felt something touching my arm and turned round to see Hanna carefully tucking the book into the crook of my elbow, a look of determined concentration on her face. Well, how could I not buy it after that?! It IS a new title, after all... Happily, I managed NOT to buy anything at Age UK, round the corner, but I found a copy of Siddhartha Mukherjee's highly acclaimed The Emperor of All Maladies for £2 in Mind. I'd been reluctant to get it from the library, just because it's so big, so I was well chuffed to find one at such a ridiculously tiny price!

Finally we gave up on the charity shops and headed down to the indie bookshop on corner, where I was HOPING to find a copy of Morgan Matson's Amy and Roger's Epic Detour. I was out of luck there, so instead I had a good look round and found two of my highest-wishlisted books inexplicably reduced to £3.99! An excellent substitute, I think you'll agree. I expanded my Beat collection a bit with The Subterraneans by Jack Kerouac - which is also another title to add to my collection of lovely Penguin Modern Classics - and snapped up the hilarious-sounding Are We Nearly There Yet? by Ben Hatch, the story of one family's 8000-mile trip around Britain in a Vauxhall Astra. Needless to say, that one's very high up my TBR list! :)

That was it for Monday around town - we were a bit shopped out by this point so we went for tea and cake at the coffee house across from our bookshop to round off the afternoon. But I WILL just mention that I'm also expecting my pre-order of The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta in its new paperback edition. I got an email yesterday to say that it'd been dispatched, so it SHOULD have been here today with Amazon Prime, but I haven't seen any sign of a courier yet! I'll give it an honorable mention anyway, because I'm seriously looking forward to this one!

Sooooo, that's it for now! Have you read and loved any of these books already? Should I be boosting any of them straight up Mount TBR because they're too awesome to resist? Would any of them be perfect for Once Upon a Read-a-Thon next week? TELL ME EVERYTHING!

:-) you guys were much more restrained than I usually am! Gah I wish I'd known you were after a copy of Amy + Roger... I just gave away my pretty much as new copy!:-(
ReplyDeleteOh well, such is life... It's not like I don't have enough to read already, haha! I'm often far less restrained, but I had to be a good example for Hanna, didn't I? Also, Mum might have killed me, which is an excellent reason to behave myself. ;)
DeleteOh my word. Just you wait until my Showcase Sunday post tomorrow! Might have to steal this style, actually. Arrange my books by day and where they're from. I'm also a little jealous of you guys - I wanna go book blogger shopping!!
ReplyDeleteGet your arse up here then! :)
DeleteWish I could!
DeleteYay! Imagine how much fun we could have in Leeds... Waterstones, Smiths, The Works, charity shops... *cackles*
ReplyDeleteI love the Air Ambulance Shop by the way. It may be my new best friend :)
Tell me about it! *plots next secret trip to the AAS to buy books* :)
DeleteYeah i live nr Leeds, don't forget about me hehe!!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you had a fab time!!!!Great commentary there Ellie ;) I love charity shop browsing for books, even better is carboots where i get boos for 25-50p!! My best buy was all the twiligt books, breaking dawn in hardback for £1! yep for all of them :) I got to Doncaster carboot at the keepboat stadium, loadsa stalls and fab!!
You both got some interesting books there :) I got Amy and Roger's epic detour in a recent haul, i badly wanted it and couldn't get it anywhere, had to give in and get it from Amazon, but got it cheaper from a seller on there brand new.
I have just review books this wk but 1s i really want to read :)
happy reading xx
I do like car boot sales... We have a big one here and a couple of summers ago I went over on an emergency mission to restock some of our most hard-hit shelves. I ended up bringing back one bagful for the shop, a whole bagful for myself, plus a cool cushion for 50p. :D
DeleteOooh, I really want to read The Leftovers too! Will be eagerly awaiting your review of that!
ReplyDeleteAlso, what would you have done if you'd both wanted the same book?! Bad things could have gone down!
Nah, we'd have been nice I'm sure! I'm not supposed to be buying books so unless I was desperate for it I'd have let Hanna take it... Or thwacked her over the head with a tote bag and run! ;)
DeleteI loved Rules of Civility! It's probably still one of my favorite books of the year.
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to that one, I must say! It might be perfect for our not-booked-yet-but-eagerly-planned holiday when the schools have gone back... *grins at the mere thought*
