THE STICKY NOTE OF NEWS

I've got a new About Me page! No particular reason, I just thought it was a fun replacement for the now-defunct Review Policy page I had before. Plus I can chop and change it on a regular basis, which will give me something else to play with when I'm bored at the shop. :)

Literary Giveaway Blog Hop

Welcome to my first ever giveaway hop!  The Literary Blog Hop, hosted by Judith at Leeswammes, is an alternative to a lot of the giveaway hops held elsewhere that seem to comprise of mostly YA, fantasy and paranormal blogs and prizes. I enjoy those too, because I read a bit of everything, but often a lot of the same books are being given away across the board, so I wanted to take part in a more eclectic version!

There are several big 'anniversaries' happening for me at the moment so it seemed a good time for a giveaway.  My 2-year blogoversary is at the start of July, it's our bookshop's third birthday around the same time, I turned 25 at the end of May, and it's been a year since last summer's big Page to Screen event here on Musings of a Bookshop Girl!  How time flies, and all that...

The Books

So, what can you win?  Given my general adherence to the 'read then watch' rule, I've decided to offer up a selection of books that are making (or have already made) the leap onto the big screen in 2012 (plus one that isn't far behind).  I love reading a book then finding out how a director has worked that book into a new medium, for a new audience!

The winner will choose ONE BOOK from the following list.  There are some fantastic titles up for grabs, so choose wisely!

1.   The Woman in Black - Susan Hill
2.   Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - Jonathan Safran Foer
3.   Bel-Ami - Guy de Maupassant
4.   We Bought a Zoo - Benjamin Mee
5.  Salmon Fishing in the Yemen - Paul Torday
6.   Cosmopolis - Don DeLillo
7.   On the Road - Jack Kerouac
8.   The Silver Linings Playbook - Matthew Quick
9.   The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien
10.   Life of Pi - Yann Martel
11.  The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
12.  The Perks of Being a Wallflower - Stephen Chbosky (this one's 2013, but so what!)

The Rules

1.  Just fill in the form below - it's as easy as that!  I've never used Rafflecopter before, so if you have any problems, let me know!
2.  This giveaway is INTERNATIONAL, as long as Book Depository ships free to your country.  I have Amazon Prime now so if the winner is in the UK I may send your book that way instead.
3.  You get one free entry on the form; all additional entries are optional.
4.  The giveaway runs to the end of 27th June.
5.   The winner has 72 hours to respond to my email; after that I will choose a new winner.
6.  You may receive a different edition/cover to the one shown, and I reserve the right to amend the list if prices of any of the books suddenly rocket ridiculously. Not that I think it'll happen, but better to be safe than sorry!  :)
7.  Thanks for entering, and good luck!

  1. I pretty much think The Shawshank Redemption is the most perfect book to film transfer - and a pretty perfect film overall. I dare anyone to re-read the book without 'hearing' Morgan Freeman's narration now! :-)

  2. So far I like The Phantom of The Opera the most...

  3. I absolutely love the adaptatons of The Lord of the Rings! While they are of course not strictly faithful to the original material they have managed to capture its magic in a wonderful way. I am looking forward to The Hobbit so much, although I still have to read it first :)
By the way, you have a lovely blog. I have no idea why I've only come across it now!

  4. I agree with Cassandra. My favorite adaptations are LOTR movies as well.

  5. Thanks for the giveaway! A nice idea books to films. I am thinking of Sophie's Choice straight away. It's so long ago, but it was the first thing to jump to mind. I thought that was a great book and a beautiful film.

    Enjoy the giveaway hop!

  6. Not a direct book to movie crossover, but the use of Yamamoto Tsunetomo's sayings in the Hagakure, which make up a good part of Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai directed by Jim Jarmusch & starring Forest Whitaker, is something that sprang to mind.

    1. PS. my choice would be Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - Jonathan Safran Foer, as keep meaning to try something by this writer.

  7. The Princess Bride. I like the movie far better than the book, amazingly. :P

  8. Great book selection! My favourite adaptation, and possibly the only time I thought the film was better than the book, was Nicholas Sparks' THe Notebook. The film made me cry, but the book was just too schmaltzy!

  11. Haha, I feel bad entering this because you send me books all the time...

Let's see - I love the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice, the BBC one. Hmm, might watch that this afternoon actually. I adore the Scott Pilgrim film too, especially as I bought the manga thing last week. What else? The Percy Jackson film wasn't bad, oh and Lord of the Rings!

  12. You have chosen a wonderful selection of books to give away. I just saw Bel Ami at Barnes and Noble yesterday, and I got so enthused I downloaded it on my nook.

Perhaps one of the greatest prizes in these give always is to meet a blogger to which one feels a certain "simpatico". It's nice to visit your beautiful blog.

  13. I would have to say Romeo and Juliet

  14. Hmm there are so many good ones! I really liked The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo adaptation this year. But then of course there's Pride & Prejudice . . . I'll just stick with those 2!

  20. My favorite book-to-film adaptation is probably Running With Scissors.. thought they did a great job capturing the mood & the sense of humor. Loved the book & loved the movie!

Thanks for the chance... I've got my eye on that Guy de Maupassant! :P

  24. My favorite book-to-movie adaptation is probably Much Ado About Nothing directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Emma Thompson. It's one of my favorite Shakespeare plays with two of my favorite actors in the best roles.
    Thanks for the giveaway. :)

  25. I love the LOTR adaptations but also the Harry Potter movies. :) I think they did a wonderful job with both.

  26. Harry Potter series and The Notebook.

  27. Definitely Little Women. :) It's my favorite book and a beautiful film!

  28. I'm very critical of movies made from books :( bc Hollywood can never get it just right, but I was impressed with Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. It's an older one but I read it for the first time with my students just a year or so ago.

  29. I usually don't like movies made from books, but I do like the Harry Potter movies.

  30. North and South! It was book to tv-mini series though :) It was wonderful! Thank you for the international giveaway,

  31. Lord of the Rings is an amazing masterpiece (even if I do occasionally shout at the screen: "WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH MY FARAMIR?!" or "THAT NEVER REALLY HAPPENED.") So I was wondering if The Hobbit would be one of the books on this giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity. My all-time favourite book to screen is Gone With the Wind.

  33. I thought High Fidelity was an excellent adaptation.

  34. I think it would be Lord of the Rings. Thanks for the giveaway!

  35. My favourite book-to-movie adaptation is "Pride and Prejudice," both the BBC 1995 mini-series and the 2005 version. They stay true to the novel in a way I appreciate. I can't say I was a fan of the 1940 black and white version, though.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I really don't have one. I liked About A Boy...and the recent The Hunger Games film.

Oh, and Perks is coming out this September actually! I'm stoked.

  37. Hmm, I must admit that if I see a book has been made into a movie, I'll read the book and not watch the movie!
I enjoyed Gone With the Wind even though the plots were rather different!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm waiting how good the Perks of A Wallflower can be in the movies but at the moment, the book-to-movie adaptation that I'd say, the best amongst all is Harry Potter! The substantiality of the story is there and the actors/actresses in the movie fits perfectly to the characters.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love the Little Women version from the 90's.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I love Wuthering Heights adaptation, but only maybe because I like the book so much :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Pride & Prejudice! A great book turned into a wonderful movie! Or I may be biased since it starred my fave actress in one of my fave books?

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  42. The Hunger Games did it better than I thought...and I am so looking forward to The Great Gatsby!

  44. Memoirs of a Geisha. That movie is beautiful!

  45. Bridge to Terabithia was my favourite adaptation - I thought it captured the finer nuances wonderfully!
I also liked the Swedish film of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - the book was just so slow!

    Thanks for hosting this giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Benjamin Button. The movie is NOTHING like Fitzgerald's book, but it's great anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Twilight, mainly because it was truer to the book.. Just saw the Abe Lincoln movie last night and it was NOTHING like the book.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I also am a big stickler of reading a book before watching a movie adaptation. I think if you do it in the reverse, it ruins the reading experience as it limits my imagination.

I love the adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and the new Jane Eyre. I think most people disagree with me because they both leave out quite a bit, but they both felt like they kept the right tone of the book.

  49. I think the movie version of THE VIRGIN SUICIDES was much kinder than the book regarding the Trip-Lux romances. I really loved GOON, but I haven't read the book and I imagine that there were some big differences between the versions. I have high hopes for the upcoming movie version of Dave Bidini's BASEBALLISSIMO, too.

  53. Wow, okay, I know it may offend some other bloggers, but this is one of the BEST selection of books that I've ever come across in a giveaway! I mean, each one of these books is renowned in it's own way - and the funny thing is, there's more than ONE book on this list, that I'm DYING to read - so GREAT selection there.

My favorite book-to-movie adaptation has to be Schindler's List (it was published as Schindler's Ark. This was one of two books that I read AFTER watching the movie (the other being Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton), that I absolutely LOVED! Thank you SO much for this amazing giveaway opportunity! :D
